Repeal the Sedition Act in Malaysia

Freedom of expression is under attack in Malaysia. In recent years, civil society activists, academics, political opponents and others speaking out against the government have been charged under the Sedition Act and other repressive laws used to stifle dissent.

This petition highlights two individuals who have been targeted by the government and calls on the relevant authorities to drop these charges and others like them.

Call on the Attorney General Mohamed Apandi Ali and Prime Minister Najib Razak to immediately and unconditionally drop all charges against N. Surendran and Khalid Ismath and others facing trial for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression in Malaysia.

Prisoners at imminent risk of execution

Three prisoners were moved on 8 May at around 8pm from Batam Class II Penitentiary in Riau Islands to Batu prison in Nusakambangan prison island in Central Java, where 13 executions were carried out in 2015.

The authorities have not yet made public the names of the prisoners selected for execution nor the date of the scheduled executions.

Sign this petition to call on the Indonesian authorities to immediately halt plans to carry out any executions.

Abolish the death penalty in Malaysia

The death penalty is the ultimate denial of human rights. It is the premeditated and cold-blooded killing of a human being by the state. According to Amnesty International’s Death Sentences and Executions 2013 & 2014 report, 990 people are on death row as at end 2014, including 648 sentenced for drug trafficking offences.

Since August, at least eight people have been charged for so-called ‘seditious’ comments under Malaysia’s draconian Sedition Act. Write to Malaysia’s authorities, calling on them to repeal the Sedition Act immediately.

Calling on Malaysia to ratify the UN Convention Against Torture

“No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degradingtreatment or punishment” - Universal Declarations of Human Rights, Article 5.
